What is Legionella Water Testing?

Legionella water testing: we sample the water on your premises, looking for microscopic Legionella bacteria. These bacteria occur naturally in rivers, lakes and soil, and have the ability to successfully colonise man-made water systems, which often provide ideal conditions for them.

We test for Legionella infection. Although Legionella is not transmissible from person to person; it is caused by the inhalation of tiny water droplets containing the bacteria, and can cause a flu-like illness which is potentially fatal. Those most at risk are:

·         people over 45 years of age

·         smokers and heavy drinkers

·         people suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease

·         people suffering from diabetes, lung and heart disease

·         anyone with an impaired immune system

The potential for Legionella to become a health hazard is present in commercial and domestic water storage and distribution systems, air conditioning, humidifiers, cooling towers,  and other aquatic systems, such as whirlpool spa baths, medical/dental equipment, and sprinkler systems.

What can I do about Legionella Water Testing?

The risk from Legionella bacteria can be controlled in many ways; temperature control of stored water is usually the simplest and most effective. Other methods could include cleanliness and maintenance of premises and plant, and ensuring a regular turnover of stored water. In some cases other, more complex methods may be necessary, such as re-designing the plumbing systems, and ultra-violet or chemical sterilization of water.
